RECYCLING FOR FASHIONABLE CAUSES
By ROBERT JANJIGIAN |
|
The idea of sustainability would seem to be anathema to those who consider themselves in fashion. Trends come and go in just a matter of months and the next new thing is always on the horizon.
More and more fashion types are waking up to the idea of recycling, of aiding ecological and green-minded efforts and of supporting environmental and/or charitable causes while continuing to produce "fashionable" things for us to wear. Their raised consciousnesses indeed makes the practice of dropping a few bucks — even a few thousand bucks or more — on something probably none of us really needs slightly less of a guilty pleasure.

*Jewelry designer John Hardy, whose workshop is located in Nusa Penida, a small island off the coast of Bali, has launched a collection of sterling silver jewelry to support the planting of bamboo by islanders to improve the environment and the local economy. By reforesting Nusa Penida, the habitat of the endangered Bali starling songbird will also be restored and expanded. Hardy's Bamboo Collection includes nine items priced from $95 for a slim bamboo-look bangle or a pair of small hoop earrings to $795 for wide kick cuff. Ten percent of the proceeds from each item sold will go to the cause. The silver Bamboo Collection pieces are available only online at www.sustainableadvertising.org |
