Planting seedlings on Nusa Penida is a collaborative effort that involves a lot of people. The seedlings must first be transported from John’s nursery in Sibang Kaja, located in central Bali, to Nusa Penida, via truck, ferry, and fishermens’ boats. Once they are arrived in Nusa Penida, the seedlings are watered and cared for at the Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF) nursery, run by our good friend and partner in this project, Pak Bayu. From FNPF’s nursery, the seedlings are then distributed to the participating farmers’ cooperatives on Nusa Penida for them to plant on their own lands, and some of the seedlings are planted by Pak Bayu and his staff directly.
Farmers’ cooperatives, called Kelompok Petani in Indonesian, are the predominant community-based organizations in most villages throughout the Indonesian archipelago. They are frequently composed of multi-generational family units, and the Kelompok Petani are individuals who band together in order to pool resources and returns.

On Nusa Penida, Pak Bayu and John Hardy are working with several farmers’ cooperatives, all of whom are based at the banjar-level.
(A banjar is a multi-generational Balinese Hindu family unit).
The most active kelompoks, their banjars, and leaders are:
- Kelompok Petani Tebe Lestari, in Banjar Saren, headed by I Nyoman Citra, and consisting of about 28 people;
- Kelompok Dimel Bali Kembang, in Banjar Secang, headed by I Wayan Sujana, and consisting of about 30 people;
- Kelompok Petani Wana Mukti Lestari, in Banjar Bodong, headed by Si Nyoman Sukarta, and consisting of about 30 people;
- Kelompok Petani Wana Rehayu, in Banjar Tanah Bias, headed by I Putu Widiana, and consisting of about 32 people;
